While I’m not on the Le’bandwagon, I do believe Lebron deserved the MVP this year and that he has the potential to compete with MJ. His stats this year coupled with his past performances (ie. the 48 point performance against the Pistons in Game 5 of 2007 Conference Finals = beginning of the end for my ‘stones) are incredible. But the coronation after his game saving 3 ball against the Magic yesterday was gratuitous and premature.  Jordan-esque?  Watershed moment?  Come on,  this was game 2!  Had Mo Money or DWest hit the shot, the reaction would have been of relief. Had Lebron missed, the loss could be considered as one of the largest playoff collapses in recent history – Cleveland and the King were up by 23 points…at home where they lost just two games all year.

The Jordan-over-Ehlo comparison is absurd as well.  Jordan hit a series-winning shot that prolonged the Bulls’  season and  Craig Ehlo’s legacy.  Cleveland salvaged game 2. They need to win this series AND the Cavs need to win the championship for this to be legendary.   Until that happens, this should be considered a momentary clutch shot, just like the ridiculous buzzer beaters in the Bulls-Celts series.  Win the championship and this is indeed watershed, like Jordan’s numerous finals performances or Horry’s 3-balls for the Lakers and Spurs or Magic’s baby hook or Tayshaun’s block**…

* I have not seen 90% of the playoffs this year as the IPL gets all of ESPN’s love here.  My thoughts are formed from watching gamecast and buffered replays.
** About go down 2 games, Tayshaun’s block saved the game.  You know how the story ends. Watershed.

  1. greatest shot of lebrons career thus far.if he misses that shot, the work he has done this season would likely be all for naught.for all he did against the pistons in 07 (48 pts by the way, not 49; they also lost 2 games at home during the regular season, but i digress) that was unexpected.now that he is taking over as alpha dog of the league, shots like the 3 are expected of him now.prior to this shot, he never did have that “watershed” clutch shot in his playoff career.does this catapult him to the title?that remains to be seen.on the same token, if you say the tayshaun block was a watershed moment, then how is this not? no block, and pistons down 2 games.no 3 and cavs down 2 games.same scenario.this shot can turn the fortunes of a doomed sports city and let LBJ take that proverbial mantle from his airness

    • a few things. 1. quit medicine and get into color commentary. 2. tay’s was assigned a watershed moment after the pistons won. exactly as you said, when looking back at the 2004 playoffs, had he not blocked reggie, they likely would have been doomed. 3. lebron deserves recognition for the shot. but i thought his automatic ascension to jordan status after the shot and before he wins the chip this year is unwarranted. if they win, then it is season-changing. 4. did you really just relinquish jordan’s throne? really? even with your d-rose bulls and the 2014 pistons to contend with?

  2. i will never relinquish MJ as the G.O.A.T. and i do agree that LBJ does not deserve that exalted status that has come of this shot, he needs to be making shots like this to claim the throne that MJ has left vacant for the past decade.as for your pistons making a comeback 5 years from now, they need joe d to use the money coming off the cap with sheed/iverson to get younger and they need bynum and stuckey to go out of their minds to even get near what chauncey brought to the team. tayshaun has maxed out as a player and i see no more room for growth in his game. the whole chemistry of the team was gone when he was traded yet they still thought they could turn it on when they wanted like they had done for the 6 previous years. as for d-rose, he is flat out sick baller, yet i am questionable about some of the decisions front office has made. $70 million to deng when salmons is a more athletic and cheaper version of him?!? for all the growth tyrus had during the season, vinny didnt trust him in the playoffs down the stretch; we had lamarcus but traded him; so sometimes i question what we are doing in the chi. either way, your blog is interesting, and keep the sports talk up so i can correct you some more. late
